I logged in today for like 15 minutes, 5 people online, not a single letter muttered in chat. What is this tomfoolery? What happened to logging in midway through someones conversation and butting in?

I've logged in a couple times in the past couple days at different points of the day to see when a busy time is, don't see anymore than 7 online at a time, site says there's 54 online right now, not sure where it gets its information or what all these people are doing.

The number includes the website/portal. Could be just people coming in from search engines that have never signed up. They are still counted and there are people that log into the website but not the client. We exclude robots.
As for people on the client, the one thing that is a struggle is that since the "fillers" are gone, this means we often suffer from the critical mass concept. People login, see a couple people, and they log back off. That cycle wont fix itself until at some point everyone who logs in, logs in at once. When we had the fillers, this usually never happened. Gaming has evolved and more so in the last few years and the market-base/player-base for a game such as this is pretty minimal UNLESS it is a facebook-y type app.
Funding has run pretty short and its pretty difficult to move forward to version 4. We still are... just slowly.

The game should allow for people to play against bots. As a way of keeping people online.
If not that, advertising the game in the right places (Final Fantasy communities) would lure people in too.
But the ability to play bots while would be the best. Log in, see no one, play bots for a while while waiting for someone of flesh and bone.
I've loved this game since forever, and would really hate to see it go
